SUMMARY: Russian forces detained a rural community leader three times between June and September 2022. The first detention lasted four hours on June 10; the second lasted almost five days beginning on June 23, after which he was replaced as community leader, and the last detention took place from September 15 to 19. While in captivity the final time, he was severely beaten and tortured with electric shock from a Soviet-era field telephone during interrogations. After his release, he managed to reach Ukrainian-controlled territory but still received threats via text message from the perpetrators.
