Scholars Network second wave member Wizdom Powell currently serves as Chief Purpose Officer at Headspace, a company that provides wellness tools in the hope of supporting lifelong mental health care. Dr. Powell’s commitment to health equity has led to national and international recognition as a top scholar of the social determinants of health inequities among boys and men of color.
As Chief Purpose Officer, Dr. Powell has engaged in many public events to support her work, including a recent appearance on the Urban Institute’s Evidence in Action podcast, where she discussed America’s mental health crisis, Black masculinity, and creating culturally relevant health care systems that value people’s lived experience as evidence. Dr. Powell notes that at Headspace, an “intersectional lens is always front and center. We’re thinking about place, we’re thinking about how place and product intersect, and we’re thinking about how we ensure that every single person, no matter where they live, work, play, pray, or get educated, has access to a mental health care solution that meets them where they are.”
Upcoming engagements for Dr. Powell include a keynote address at the 2024 American Psychological Association’s convention, titled “Disrupting single stories: The whole truths about Black male masculinities and mental health.” She will also be serving as a keynote speaker at Copenhagen’s TechBBQ, a startup and innovation summit held each year in Scandinavia, as well as speaking at HLTH 2024 to discuss innovations in the healthcare landscape.
We congratulate Dr. Wizdom Powell on all her recent achievements!
