RESUMEN/ABSTRACT
On the Border: Reading Between the Public and the Personal in Mahmoud Darwish’s Autobiographical Poetry
Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish (1941-2008) has long been considered the national poet of Palestine, for his poetry that “expresses the spirit of the people” in a simultaneously collective and individual voice. Darwish himself has proclaimed his poetry to “stand in the middle, on the border between the public voice and the personal voice.” However, due to the political tension of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Darwish’s poetry has often been read solely in a nationalist framework, and his work has often been categorized as a collective expression, rather than an individual one.
In this paper, I will analyze the Mahmoud Darwish’s volume Why Did You Leave the Horse Alone, “an intimate autobiography and a collective memory of the Palestinian people.” This paper will argue that Darwish’s work can be analyzed autobiographically for a greater understanding of the author’s self-fashioning, self-erasure and identity formation through his work. Likewise, this paper will consider the dangers of eliding the personal in Darwish’s poetry to collectivize and homogenize the Palestinian experience, as often occurs in the politicization and subsequent erasure of Darwish’s erotic poetry. Ultimately, this paper hopes to redefine conceptions of individuality and collectivism in Mahmoud Darwish’s poetry, including transnational interpretations outside of the parochial confines of area studies.
En la frontera: leyendo entre lo público y lo personal en la poesía autobiográfica de Mahmoud Darwish
El poeta palestino Mahmoud Darwish (1941-2008) es considerado como el poeta nacional de Palestina por su poesía que “expresa el espíritu del pueblo” en una voz simultáneamente colectiva e individual. Darwish mismo ha proclamado que su poesía “está situada en el medio, en la frontera entre la voz pública y la voz personal.” Sin embargo, debido a la tensión política del conflicto israelí-palestino, la poesía de Darwish se lee exclusivamente dentro de un marco nacionalista y sus obras se clasifican como una expresión colectiva únicamente, en vez de una individual. En este ensayo, analizaré el volumen de Mahmoud Darwish: Por Qué Dejaste el Caballo Sólo, “una autobiografía íntima y una memoria colectiva del pueblo palestino.” Este ensayo argumenta que la obra de Darwish se puede analizar autobiográficamente para un mejor entendimiento de la auto-representación, el auto-borradura, y la formación de identidad del autor a través de su arte. Asimismo, este ensayo considera los peligros de omitir lo personal en la poesía de Darwish para colectivizar homogeneizar la experiencia palestina, como algo que ocurre comúnmente en la politización y borradura subsecuente de su poesía erótica. Al final, este ensayo busca redefinir las concepciones de la individualidad y el colectivismo en la poesía de Mahmoud Darwish, incluyendo interpretaciones transnacionales fuera de los límites parroquiales de los estudios regionales.
