Sociology Undergraduate Research Opportunity (SURO)

Fall 2020 SURO team

The SURO allows students to work as a research assistant for a project, to learn more about a specific topic in the discipline while having the opportunity to practice sociological research methods. During the Fall 2020 semester, SURO students examined court documents of nearly 450 lawsuits filed against colleges and universities’ handling of sexual misconduct. Under the guidance of graduate students and faculty, SURO students coded the cases for various characteristics. Through this process, students learned principles of sociological research, practices of content analysis, and knowledge of the legal system. The product of their work is further analyzed in order to illuminate the role of litigations in shaping the practices and policies of universities and colleges.
