Frame and Preparation
Mapping Berlin / Damaskus 2: die Aufsätze
Introduction
This activity is the second part of a two part module that engages with the illustrations and essays created as part of the the Mapping Berlin / Damaskus – eine neue literarische Kartographie (2019-2020) project. Background information about this project and each of the authors can be found at that link. The first part of this lesson can be found here.
In this activity, students focus on reading, writing, and verbal communication skills. Students can either be divided into four groups and each read just one of the essays, or they can be divided into two groups and each read two of the essays, depending on the reading level of the class and if it is assigned as pre-work or in-class work.
Materials
Below is a worksheet that proposes a series of smaller exercises to engage with their assigned text. It begins with reading the essay (as homework/pre-work), discussing the essay in a small group, preparing to and recounting the essay to someone hasn’t read it, before a large group discussion on the project.
