Introduction

This lesson focuses on the English translation of Ika Hügel-Marshall’s Invisible Woman alongside May Ayim’s poem “Distant Ties”. This lesson would pair well in a module including other lessons on May Ayim (for example this one) and with the film Audre Lorde: The Berlin Years.

Preparation

It would be useful to review the historical background of these texts with your students. To that end, here is a slide show drawn from the book Race After Hitler by Heide Fehrenbach.

Text and Discussion

The following document hosts a guide containing two related lessons. They include discussion questions with suggested answers, as well as some specific smaller group work activities. This guide is meant to be utilized by the instructor and not directly distributed to students.
