Anita Daniel (1893-1978) was a fashion journalist who wrote for the Ullstein publications “Die Dame”, a lifestyle and fashion magazine popular among upper-class women, and “Uhu”, and later, from exile, for the Jewish New York émigré newspaper “Aufbau”. Whereas her colleague at Ullstein, Vicki Baum, eventually became well-known, Daniel is virtually unknown today. A keen observer of fashion, society, and the urban lifestyle of the time—both of 1920s Berlin and the 50s and 60s in New York—her work and observations provide insight into the feminist movements and the history of masculinity and femininity.
