
Born in 1941, Ottinger is a lesbian German artist, photographer, and filmmaker. After studying to be a painter at the Academy of Arts in Munich, she participated in the nouvelle figuration movement in 1960s France and later began her filmmaking career in Berlin. Her films range from the styles and themes of New German Cinema and feminism to ethnography and documentary, covering ideas and people from Germany to China, Istanbul, and the islands of Alaska. Some notable works include the films Dorian Gray im Spiegel der Boulevardpresse (1984) and Bildnis einer Trinkerin (1979).
