projects — payment reform

implications of Medicare Advantage
with Andy Ryan (Brown University)

efficacy of bundled payment reforms
with Andy Ryan (Brown University)

abstract
Especially in select procedures like joint replacement, bundled payments have proven to be cost-effective without affecting quality of care. We aim to understand whether these same effects are evident across broader clinical episodes, in light of recent CMS bundled payment programs.

provider incentives in prescription choices
with Colin Holtze and Parth Modi (Michigan Medicine)
abstract

Building upon literature that explores associations between pharmaceutical company payments to physicians and subsequent prescribing patterns, we further this research in a context specific to pulmonary medicine.

institutional reactions to—and implications of—CMS price transparency policies
with Jeff Kullgren and Nicholas Berlin (Michigan Medicine)

abstract
Since January 2021, CMS has required hospitals to release insurer-negotiated prices for healthcare services, focused upon 300 “shoppable services.” We curate a stratified random sample of 485 U.S. hospitals to explore institutional compliance with federal price transparency mandates. Current work explores these “shoppable services” in greater depth.

projects — COVID-19

community health externalities of COVID-19 policy
with Yeşim Orhun (Ross School of Business)

abstract
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a range of local policies were instituted across communities to combat viral transmission. We exploit this heterogeneity to explore externalities of these policies at the household level.

understanding clinical outcomes during COVID-19 pandemic
with Frederick Korley (Michigan Medicine)

abstract
With survey and electronic health record (EHR) data from a single academic hospital center, we provide a stream of research to study (1) clinical predictors of health outcomes for the COVID-19 patient population; and (2) wellness of emergency department (ED) clinicians, during the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

optimizing drug cocktails for COVID-19 patients
with Jonathan Sexton (University of Michigan)
abstract

To date, no sure treatment is available for COVID-19 patients. Using a combination of wet lab techniques and econometric survival analyses, we aim to determine combinations of drugs that may prove safe and efficacious for COVID-19.

projects — reproductive healthcare

cervical cancer screening
with Vanessa Dalton (Michigan Medicine) and Mark Fendrick (Michigan Medicine)
abstract

As part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), medical guideline recommended cervical cancer screenings are covered by health insurance plans at no cost to individual patients. Follow-up care, however, is often not covered. We determine the extent to which the current payment scheme serves as a deterrent for effective population health.

abortion access
with Vanessa Dalton (Michigan Medicine) and Yeşim Orhun (Ross School of Business)
abstract

We seek to understand the long-term implications of abortion clinic closures in local communities.

projects — drug delivery

cost-effectiveness analysis of drug delivery mechanisms
with Garth Strohbehn (VA Ann Arbor Center for Clinical Management and Research)
