Past Meetings


2019-2020 Meetings

December 2nd – We will have a workshop from 5-7pm with Toyota Visiting Professor Levi McLaughlin and Elizabeth Williams-Oerberg. We will be discussing their current projects. Materials will be circulated in advance of this meeting.

November 21st – We will have a meeting with Reiko Ohnuma, Chair and Professor of Religion at Dartmouth College, from 4:30pm-6pm to discuss a recent article. A hosted dinner will follow.

2018-2019 Meetings

December 11th – We will have a peer workshop meeting on Tuesday, December 11th, from 4-6pm in the Buddhist Studies Seminar Room on the third floor of STB. We will be discussing a member’s article draft.

November 8th – We will have a dinner meeting with Patrice Ladwig of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity.

October 30th – We will have a book discussion of Dorothy Wong’s Buddhist Pilgrim-Monks as Agents of Cultural and Artistic Transmission from 4-6pm in the Buddhist Studies Seminar Room on the third floor of STB.

September 27th – We will have an author conversation with Ben Schonthal, Associate Professor of Buddhism and Asian Religions at University of Otago, New Zealand, from 4-6pm in the Buddhist Studies Seminar Room on the third floor of STB.

September 13th – Our first meeting of the 2018-19 academic year will be Thursday, September 13th. This will be a planning meeting, held in the Buddhist Studies Seminar Room on the third floor of STB.

2017-2018 Meetings

April – Our sixth meeting of the 2017-2018 academic year will be on Wednesday, April 25th, from 2-4pm in STB 6000. We will be discussing three members’ work.

March – Our fifth meeting of the 2017-2018 academic year will be on Wednesday, March 28th from 5-7pm in STB 4000. We will be discussing Jacqueline Stone’s Right Thoughts at the Last Moment: Buddhism and Deathbed Practices in Early Medieval Japan

March – Our fourth meeting of the 2017-2018 academic year will be on Tuesday, March 6th from 4-6pm in STB 6000. We will be meeting with and discussing a circulated article by Professor Jacob Dalton, Khyentse Foundation Distinguished Professor in Tibetan Buddhism at University of California, Berkeley.

January – Our third meeting of the 2017-2018 academic year will be on Wednesday, January 24th from 5-7pm in STB 4000. We will be discussing David Geary’s The Rebirth of Bodh Gaya: Buddhism and the Making of a World Heritage Site.

December – Our second meeting of the 2017-2018 academic year will be on Wednesday December 13th, from 5-7pm in STB 6000. We will be discussing a member’s dissertation chapter.

October – Our first meeting of the 2017-2018 academic year will be October 11 from 6-8pm in 6000 South Thayer Building. The discussion will focus on Wei-Cheng Lin’s Building a Sacred Mountain: The Buddhist Architecture of China’s Mount Wutai.

Winter 2017 Meetings

March – Our second meeting is on Thursday, March 23 at 6pm in 6000 South Thayer Building. The featured text for this meeting is James Benn’s Tea in China: A Religious and Cultural History.

February – New Work in Buddhist Studies will hold its first meeting Wednesday, February 22 at 6pm in 6000 South Thayer Building to discuss Janet Gyatso’s Being Human in a Buddhist World: An Intellectual History of Medicine in Early Modern Tibet.
