Campers had a blast learning all about space this week!

On Monday, campers spent the day learning about the planets and our solar system! To begin, they took a “tour” through the solar system with the help from our counselors and our blown up planets!

Campers learned that Venus is the second closest planet to the Sun and the hottest!
Campers learned that Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest!

Campers spent most of the afternoon creating their solar system models. Campers got to color the planets and then attach the planets to their mobile in the correct order. Some campers tried to color the planets as accurate as possible, while other capers opted to get creative!

Some finished creations!

To finish the afternoon campers enjoyed playing some space themed games like space bingo, a planets version of Candyland and a planets matching game!

On Tuesday campers learned all about Mars! Campers spent most of the day creating their Mars dioramas! Campers were given different figurines like an astronaut, rocket or satellite. Campers got very creative with their dioramas and it was the highlight of the day!

Some finished creations!

Later, campers tried to navigate their Mars rover through a maze. The oldest group used a toy car while the younger kids took turns being the rover. The trick was that those who were the rovers or controlling the car could not see the course! Mission Control helped guide the rover!

At the end of the day, campers talked about the types of things and people they would need to bring on a trip to Mars.

On Wednesday, campers learned about the moon! Right after lunch, the campers learned about a solar eclipse and watched as the counselors simulated the event with our blow up solar system!

Next campers talked about craters on the moon! They learned that sometimes craters look likeĀ  different things. A crater might look like an animal or it may look like a face. They the tried to search for animals on a picture of the moon while using binoculars!

For the majority of the day, campers designed their rockets for the launch on Friday. Campers worked together to create the rockets just like real engineers. They came up with some pretty cool designs!

On Thursday campers learned about stars and constellations and got to go on a field trip to the planetarium at Angell Hall! Even getting rained on couldn’t stop the campers from having a good time! Before the planetarium show the campers spent sometime drawing constellations. The yellow group also played a game of telescope mafia where hey had to figure out who was sabotaging the telescopes! In the end the saboteur won!

At the planetarium show they learned about the different constellations and asked lots of questions! The campers had a great time even after all the rain!

Back at the museum campers made their own constellations out of pipe cleaners and beads.

On Friday, campers learned about what it takes to e an astronaut! Capers started the day by decorating their astronaut helmets and space belts! They were all ready to take flight!

The yellow group also spent sometime testing their mental agility, something all astronauts need, by seeing how quickly they could put together a puzzle!

The rest of the day was spent launching our rockets by Palmer Field! Before our launches, campers also got to enjoy some popsicles! Once it was launch time, campers counted down as the yellow group took turns pumping air into the rockets!

Here is a video of one of our launches!

Overall, it was a great week of space camp!
