Week 7 PM: Emerging Engineers Questions

Published Categorized as Camp Explorations

Hello, Camp Families!

We are so excited to get this seventh week started! To help you better connect with and talk about the activities we are doing this week, we have some questions you can ask them each day!

On Monday, we started off the week by learning all about engineering and what types of engineering exist! As a little sampler, we had the campers engineer their very own popsicle stick catapult, and we even challenged them to build an drop-proof vessel to test out! Ask your camper(s):

  • What type of engineer would you want to be?
  • How did the popsicle stick catapult work? Did you manage to catapult something?
  • Did your water balloon break? How did you build the drop-proof vessel to keep the balloon from breaking?

On Tuesday, we got electric! We made our very own homopolar motor and played around with some static. After that, campers got to help code an ozobot and wire their very own light-up card! Ask your camper(s):

  • How did the ozobots work? How were you able to code them?
  • Show me your card! How did you get the LED to light up?
  • How does static work? What did the activity have you do?

On Wednesday, we got all shaken up and tested our structural engineering skills! The campers had a chance to build the strongest paper bridge and make a structure that could withstand an earthquake. After that, they had limited supplies and were tasked with making a straw tower to the moon. They also got to engineer their very own pop-up card. Ask your camper(s):

  • How much was your bridge able to hold?
  • Did the building you made fall during the “earthquake”?
  • How many straws were you given? And how tall were you able to make your tower?

On Thursday, we learned the nuts and bolts of mechanical engineering! We had the campers build their very own wind-powered car, their own roller coaster, and a pinwheel to take home! Ask your camper(s):

  •  How did the wind-powered car work?
  • What are the aspects of a good roller coaster? Was your marble able to make it all the way?
  • How does a pinwheel work? Show me yours!

On Friday, we got to learn all about the Earth and environmental engineering! We had the campers learn about harnessing the power of wind, how weathering impacts structure, and how we can adequately clean our water. After that, we had the campers make their very own earth paper craft with leftover paper to help reuse materials! Ask your camper(s):

  • How does weathering impact structure? What is the difference between physical and chemical weathering?
  • What did you use to clean up the water for drinking?
  • Show me your Earth craft! Is there more water or land on Earth?
