Teaching

I believe that teaching is an important part of being a statistician, whether it’s in the classroom, in a peer-reviewed journal article, while consulting with clients or faculty in other departments, or when having a casual conversation about the news.

My primary goal with students is to foster a statistical intuition and the confidence to use it. I don’t just want them to know how to use statistical techniques, but why we use them, and what to expect when we do. This intuition can help bridge the gap between theory and applications. It can make the difference between frustration and appreciation.

I have taught 8 lab sections of STATS 250: Introductory Statistics at the University of Michigan, for which I received two departmental teaching awards. I also mentored other statistics Graduate Student Instructors and now serve as a Graduate Teaching Consultant with an emphasis on Instructional Technology through UM’s Center for Research on Learning and Teaching.
