Professor Hartmann is an expert in star formation and protoplanetary disk evolution. He is a past vice-president of the American Astronomical Society.

He was also named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2011.

Hartmann is currently Leo Goldberg Collegiate Emeritus Professor of Astronomy.
