Professor Hartmann is an expert in star formation and protoplanetary disk evolution. He is a past vice-president of the American Astronomical Society, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a fellow of the AAS.

Prof. Hartmann was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2024.

He is currently Leo Goldberg Collegiate Emeritus Professor of Astronomy.

Formation of stars; molecular cloud structure; protostellar accretion; evolution of protoplanetary disks; planet formation.
