I had the pleasure of speaking last week with Tanya Basu (@mstanyabasu) regarding research I have forthcoming in Demography. The paper, “Effect of Registered Partnership on Labor Earnings and Fertility for Same-Sex Couples: Evidence From Swedish Register Data,” examines how same-sex couples in Sweden responded to legal recognition of their relationships.  My co-authors and I show evidence that entering into to legal marriage-like contracts had discernible impacts on the earnings and fertility behavior of the couples we study.  Differential effects were observed for lesbians and gay men, which speaks to overall complexity of marriage as an institution.  Tanya has a nice write-up of the findings in Time.
