The allosaurus on display wholly captivated my then-7-year-old imagination. I was absolutely convinced that I would grow up to be a paleontologist studying allosauruses in this exact museum. Fast-forward twenty years and I am indeed a PhD student doing my research in the UMMNH, but my interests have shifted towards using genetics to answer questions about the evolution of extant primates. Regardless of my shift in research interests, I will never forget the first time I saw the allosaurus that enchanted me in my youth. I still visit the paleo exhibits when I have writer’s block or such to get inspiration.
