Stepping Beyond: Childhood Stories of Memorable Characters Who Stretched Our Understanding of the World @ AADL Multipurpose Room

AADL director Josie Barnes Parker, AADL storyteller Kayla Coughlin, and AADL youth librarian Laura Pershin Raynor, a former National Storyteller of the Year, tell funny, touching stories, interspersed with guitar-and-banjo tunes by local musicians Betsy Beckerman and Sara Melton Keller.

Moth Storyslam: Discovery @ Greyline
Oct 17 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Open mike storytelling competition sponsored by The Moth, the NYC-based nonprofit storytelling organization that also produces a weekly public radio show. Each night 10 storytellers are selected at random from among those who sign up to tell a 3-5 minute story on the monthly theme. The 3 judges are recruited from the audience. Monthly winners compete in a semiannual Grand Slam. Space limited, so it’s smart to arrive early.

7:30-9 p.m. (doors open and sign-up begins at 6:30 p.m.)

Toastmaster’s at Sweetwaters @ Sweetwaters

Sweetwaters and Toastmaster community members are creating a new Toastmasters Club at Sweetwaters! We will have 1 or 2 prepared speeches, showcase some of our (kind, encouraging and gentle) evaluations of the speeches, and some opportunities for people to have impromptu speaking fun. There will also be a chance for Q & A during the meeting too.
Come a little early and pick-up a beverage or snack from the cafe and have fun making new friendships with encouraging and supportive people!

“Half-Ass Redux: A Musical Homage to the Half-Way Inn” with live bands, organized by Katri Ervamaa, Lecturer and Program Head, RC Music Program and Ingrid Racine, Academic Program Specialist, Center for World Performance
The Program:
Set 1 – 7:00pm: current RC students
Set 2 – 8:00pm: RHYTA Balcan Brass Band (sponsored by CWPS)
Set 3 – 9:00pm: Drew DeFour and the RC All-Stars, featuring soloists from RC decades.
The house band members are:
Drew DeFour: Band-leader, master of ceremonies, piano and vocals (LSA 06, RC minus one language class)
Sara Curtin: Vocals, Acoustic Guitar (RC 07)

RC: Michael Gould: Remember Me @ Keene Theater, RC

U-M percussion professor Michael Gould performs his compositions, inspired by recently retired RC instructor Ken Mikolowski’s poems, that revolve around his own experiences with loss, illness, and recovery. With narration by U-M theater professor Malcolm Tulip, and dance accompaniment by the Berlin-based Tangente Dance Company choreographed by U-M dance professor Amy Chavasse. The project title takes its inspiration from the “Dido’s Lament” aria from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. Local mezzo-soprano Deanna Relyea opens the program with a performance of the aria, accompanied by cellist Katri Ervamaa.
