Every time a bell rings an angel investor creates a new social media gadget. That’s how the saying goes, right?
Here’s where we stand on some of the other social media platforms. Check back frequently for updates and additions. If you don’t see something you’d like us to investigate, contact LSA Social or leave a comment at the bottom of this page.
About: A mobile app-driven, photo-sharing platform of 400 million users
Website: http://instagram.com/umichlsa
Strategy: In recent years, LSA has seen a substantial growth of followers on this platform that identify as students and accepted incoming students. The platform demands a posting frequency similar to Facebook yet lacks clear analytics or avenues to drive traffic for most brands. Because of this, departments and units are discouraged from creating standalone accounts.
Currently, LSA is enabling official Dean’s office groups like the Dean’s Student Ambassadors to take over the College’s account on a weekly basis. If your organization is interested in is strategically leveraging the College’s Instagram account, please contact LSA Social.

Snapchat
About: A mobile app-driven messaging platform that allows users to take and modify photos and videos which will disappear after they are viewed
Website: http://snapchat.com
Strategy: LSA is currently leveraging the massive following of the University presence on this platform. We regularly submit campaigns and events to the #UMSocial account which they work into their editorial calendar. Departments and units are expected to follow this model and not create standalone accounts.
YikYak
About: A mobile app-driven, anonymous local bulletin board whereon you can see and vote on posts from others around you.
Website: http://yikyak.com
Strategy: Because of its anonymous nature, brands are using this platform to listen to the chatter geographically close to them. #UMsocial did a great write up of their approach to YikYak. Recently, we have been approached about publishing content to “Hail Mail,” a broadcast platform for the University presence. If you have content you’d like to contribute, let us know.
Google+
About: Google’s third or fourth (we forget) attempt to build a Facebook or Twitter competitor
Website: https://plus.google.com/+umichlsa/videos
Strategy: Google+ is currently waning in interest among its users. LSA Social continues to post on this platform for promised SEO enhancements.
