Kristen Schuh, Graduate Student

From: Fishers, IN

Education: Kristen received her Bachelor’s degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she majored in Psychology and Neuroscience.

How she ended up here: Kristen was very interested in Dr. Natalie Tronson’s research, and she knew that the University of Michigan’s biopsychology program had an outstanding reputation and would allow her to be successful in her future career.

Research interests: Kristen is interested in the mechanisms underlying deficits in learning and memory following an immune challenge. Kristen is also interested in astrocytes as research is constantly uncovering new information about them.

What she’s studied in the past: As an undergrad, Kristen was an RA in Dr. Anna Radke’s laboratory where she studied fear learning and resistance to extinction using a mouse model of PTSD. Her honors thesis was on aversion-resistant alcohol drinking in mice.

What she’s studying now: The effects of a subchronic immune challenge on learning and memory and how the effect is mediated by shifts in astrocyte states.

Hobbies/Fun Facts: During undergrad, Kristen was on the gymnastics team, where she competed in all four events. Outside of lab, Kristen enjoys rock climbing and hiking and spending time with her kitten, Theodore.
