“Tragic Presentiments: Maxim Gorky and the ‘Invention’ of Soviet Humanism”

This chapter traces the “invention” of a Soviet concept of humanism (gumanizm) over the course of the 1920s to mid-1930s and the consequences of this conceptual shift for Stalinist ideology and culture. Specifically, it examines the writer Maxim Gorky’s central role in embracing humanism as a tool of antifascist coalition building in response to the perceived cultural threat from Nazism.

This event will be held virtually on Zoom on October 20th at 5pm Eastern. Please email Cheyenne (ckpett@umich.edu) or Albert (Albertca@umich.edu) for a copy of the paper (this should be available to participants by the 12th/14th) and the Zoom link. We hope to ‘see’ you there!
