Response to ‘Myths of Meritocracy, Friendship, and Fun Work’ – Mary Leighton

Response to ‘Myths of Meritocracy, Friendship, and Fun Work’

On July 20 my latest article, Myths of Meritocracy, Friendship, and Fun Work: Class and Gender in North American Academic Communities, was made available in early view on the American Anthropologist website.

It will be open access on the AA website until the end of August 2020, but you can also download the pdf from my publications page.

Since it went live, the article has featured in a news piece on archaeological field schools (pdf version), in Science magazine, and led to some vigorous conversations on Twitter.

Unfortunately a scheduled talk on the paper at Cambridge University had to be cancelled, because of the coronavirus pandemic. However, I have been able to engage in some important conversations with individuals who have reached out to me over social media or email, to talk about the issues the paper raises. These conversations have been, perhaps, even more engaging than a public lecture would be, and have given me much to think about.

I hope the conversations will continue, both in private and in public spaces (as long as it’s safe to do so!). So if you’d like to contact me about any of the issues raised by this article, please do so!
