Death Data – Precision Health Analytics Platform

Death Data

Death data is provided from the following three sources: 

  • MiChart:  Deceased date either reported by a patient’s family member or the patient died at Michigan Medicine.  

  • Michigan Death Index (MDI): Data is provided by the State of Michigan.   POTENTIAL matches of Michigan Medicine-MDI patients are based on:
    • 1) Date of Birth AND SSN OR
    • 2) First Name AND Last Name AND SSN OR
    • 3) First Name AND Last Name AND Date of Birth.​​​​​​​
      Note:  SSN is not available to researchers.  
      ​​​​
  • National Death Index:  Provided by the CDC National Center for Health Statistics, death data is matched with a patient’s record by name, date of birth and Social Security Number (SSN). Note:  SSN is not available to researchers.

** The World Health Organization defines underlying cause of death as the disease or injury which initiated the train of morbid events leading directly to death, or the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury.
