Work on “Creating Sacred Space in the Ethiopian Diaspora,” a research project funded by the Department of History of Art at University of Michigan, proceeds. Over the last several months, I traveled to Toronto, Seattle and Los Angeles where I visited Orthodox churches to study the configuration of space and visual imagery, and to engage in conversations with members of the clergy regarding the history of the church and the roles that religious images play in them. I continue to be impressed with the devotion and creativity of the communities that sustain these vital institutions.
