UM Community Voices – UM Language Matters

UM Community Voices

The University of Michigan community brings together people from across Michigan, the US, and the world. That variety of experiences walks hand-in-hand with language, including things like names to word choice, and is a valuable part of the Michigan experience as a whole. Check out what students shared with us about their favorite words and about what their names mean to them.

We’d like to hear from you (anyone in the UM community – instructors, students, post-docs, staff, etc.) about your experience with matters of language use on and around the U of M campus. For example, has there been a time you felt your accent, dialect or language was not respected on campus? In what ways have you found language differences inspiring? Empowering? Challenging? Confusing? These are a few of the issues Language Matters is interested in understanding better.

In the future, we will be conducting interviews on these very issues with members of the UM community. If you would like to share your story with us, please let us know. We would love to hear your perspective and do our best to share your experience with the greater community.  You can contact us at UMLanguageMatters@gmail.com. We will be sharing bits of those interviews here (with interviewee consent) as they are conducted and compiled. We thank you for your patience in the interim!
