Advantage: Community

Incoming students will find something for every interest within the Honors Community: academic lectures and museum tours, study and scheduling sessions (called ‘backpacking’ at U-M), and program-supported trips to popular Ann Arbor and Detroit locations. We offer students opportunities to engage in a variety of intellectual and volunteer events and experiences (Honors Reads, Honors in the Arts, Honors Film, Honors Reading Buddies, Honors FIRST Mentors), as well as chances to hear from a variety of speakers and engage in community-wide social events. Every year, we employ Honors students as Peer Mentors and Ambassadors to lead community-building activities in the program. Honors also provides students the opportunity to live with other Honors students in the Honors Housing community in South Quad. Students working toward the Junior Honors Award are required to engage in the community, both by attending a variety of breadth events as well as through an in-depth community engagement experience. This depth experience will last at least the length of a semester and will require meaningful reflection on what you learned and how you’ve grown through your participation.
