Friday, March 12th: Workshop with Keanu Heydari

European History Workshop is meeting on March 12th at 4pm to workshop an article draft by Keanu M. Heydari, a third year PhD student in the history department.  To register for this event please click the link included below. Keanu’s article is entitled: “Persian Shah, Parisian Shah: Cultural Anxiety, Orientalism, and Militarization in Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar’s 1873 Visit to France.” It is truly exciting research and below is a little excerpt summarizing his approach.
“My investigation includes a series of steadily narrowing concentric circles that offer a journey through a panorama of the Parisian cityscape, its media, the military, political challenges of the Third Republic, and finally through a body of journal articles devoted to the Shah’s visit. It also includes a technical interlude (Part II) wherein I invest the Shah himself with agency as indexed to his European voyage. Therein I describe the relationship between Persia and France and suggest that colonial homologies between the two empires can shed light on questions of identity and difference. I conclude with a reflection on the lack of research about the connections between France and Iran and look towards further avenues of research leading into the twentieth century.”
