The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences admits new graduate students entering in the Fall semester (September). We evaluate graduate student applications between January and March. The department’s webpages provides information and tips on how to apply to the Rackham Graduate School.

I recruit students with a strong quantitative background (not necessarily in Geophysics) who are interested in developing computer code and in analyzing seismograms to study Earth’s interior or earthquake rupture processes. Current research topics include seismic tomography, the analysis of wave scattering in the lower mantle, layering in the mantle transition zone, and the evaluation of seismic tomography using 2D and 3D wave propagation simulations.

The research is computational in nature and motivated by seismic data from global and regional seismic networks that are available at IRIS and other data centers. All graduate and undergraduate students in the Geophysics group, including student supervised by Professors Eric HetlandYihe Huang and Zack Spica, work together in a recently renovated computer lab.

Answers to frequently asked questions:

  • Will you recruit new students? Yes. Always. Please, reach out to me before you apply to discuss opportunities and to schedule an informal video conferencing interview so I can explain to you research opportunities in seismology and academic and social life at UM and in Ann Arbor.
  • How do I apply? See the Application Information page and Tips for Applying.
