Eligibility and Application Criteria
We welcome applications from students in diverse quantitative disciplines such as mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, computer science, and economics for our master’s program in Quantitative Finance and Risk Management. The curriculum is rigorous and requires a solid foundation in mathematics. However, we believe that exceptional students can excel irrespective of their academic backgrounds. Therefore, we are open to considering some flexibility in the coursework recommendations for highly qualified applicants.

Test Scores and GPA

GRE
The GRE general test is required for all applicants, except current U-M undergraduate students majoring in Mathematics, who are exempt from the requirement. U-M’s institution code is 1839. Test scores are valid for five years from the date of the test.

GPA
To accommodate the diversity of academic systems and grading scales, we do not set a minimum GPA requirement. However, competitive applicants typically demonstrate superior academic performance through their credentials.

TOEFL
Rackham Graduate School establishes and upholds guidelines for English proficiency requirements for international students. Applicants must meet a minimum TOEFL score of 95 (or 7 for IELTS) if required to submit one. Applications from students with TOEFL scores below 95, who are not exempt from the English proficiency requirement, will still be considered but may face a significant disadvantage in the review process. For the Quant program, Rackham Graduate School does not admit students who are required to submit a score but fail to do so, or whose scores do not meet the university’s minimum requirement of 84.
Please review the Rackham Graduate School’s Tests webpage to determine if you need to submit a test score. If you are uncertain about whether you qualify for an exemption, please contact us at quantfinms@umich.edu for assistance.
