Careers

The Quantitative Finance and Risk Management program aims to equip graduates with advanced skills as quantitative analysts and proficient problem-solvers in the financial sector. To support this objective, our dedicated program staff offers comprehensive career services aimed at enhancing students’ opportunities for securing summer internships and full-time positions that align closely with their individual interests, strengths, and career aspirations.

Customized Career Support

Explore a wealth of career resources tailored for Quant students, including:
– One-on-one career advising
– Resume and cover letter development
– Interview preparation bootcamp and workshops
– Employer and alumni information sessions
– Career development activities year-round
– Access to University Career Center resources and university-wide career fairs
– Financial support for conferences and career fairs

Throughout the year, Quant students participate in program-sponsored career development activities and receive individualized assistance in planning for and pursuing job opportunities. Our office also works directly with employers to match our students with appropriate positions. More information on the workshops, seminars, and other activities that support students’ journey toward becoming quantitative analysts can be found on our Student Life page.

The Mathematics Department hosts an annual Mathematics Career Fair for all students. The financial industry is well represented at the Career Fair including employers such as Citadel, Jane Street, etc., making it a prime opportunity for Quant students to explore career options and make connections with employers.

Students in the Quantitative Finance and Risk Management are also invited to participate in the annual Statistics Career Fair, which is hosted by our partner department and is specifically focused on master’s students.

Our students have access to all of the resources and opportunities provided by the University Career Center (UCC), including one-on-one career advising, resume and cover letter reviews, job postings, multiple career fairs in both the Fall and Winter semesters, and on-campus recruiting events. Our office works with the Career Center to identify and promote the opportunities that will be most valuable to our students.

The UCC also provides a comprehensive International Student Resources Toolkit to support career exploration, job and internship searching and continuing education for U-M international students.

First Destination Profile

A first destination profile outlines the initial career paths or further educational pursuits of graduates shortly after completing their studies. This profile categorizes students based on the first job they secured post-graduation or the decision to pursue additional education, such as a Ph.D. It’s important to note that this information is voluntarily provided by students and may not comprehensively reflect the final destinations of all graduates. This profile serves as a valuable tool for understanding early career outcomes and trends among non-native English-speaking graduates.

Information for International Students

We assist our international students in securing employment opportunities in the United States through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) programs. Our Quant program is classified under STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), making our students eligible to apply for a 24-month extension of their OPT period, known as the STEM OPT extension. This extension allows students additional time to gain practical experience in their field of study after completing their initial OPT period.
