Research interests
My research interests generally revolve around a basic curiosity to understand people’s decision making in different everyday contexts. To the extent that any human behavior can be attributed, in one way or another, to a decision made by some person at some point in time, I see in decision making an oft underestimated potential in explaining much of social psychology and human behavior. My most recent research projects are in the following areas:
- Personal risk management: Understanding and influencing how people manage daily risks in the case decisions to use risk-reducers such as seatbelts and condoms, as well as risk-related decisions as in smoking and overeating.
- Forecasting and risk communication: Understanding and improving the accuracy of predicting future events and matching the interpretation and intended meaning of probabilistic and deterministic forecasts.
- Judgment and decision making in every day contexts—Personal, consumer, legal, and medical domains.
- Culture and cognition: Cultural differences in people’s cognitive styles and decision making.
