“Rotogravure Supplement” in The Detroit Free Press (August 30th, 1925)

A bonus article for the month of August to brighten up everyone’s start to the semester! Today’s piece, a rotogravure supplement, contains two Detroit River mentions. The first is an airplane shot of the Edison Boat club’s annual regatta. The second is a picture of swimmer Edwardina Kranich, who won the Women’s Aquatic club state championship for swimming in the river.

The Women’s Aquatic club has a remarkable history, as told by U-M Dearborn’s Liz Rohan, who wrote a special piece about the club’s swimmers in the Detroit Free Press. These women demonstrated exceptional feats of athleticism, swimming distances as far as twenty four miles across Lake St Clair, just north of the river.

Airplane views of the annual regatta at Edison Boat club, August 22, the largest match of its kind ever held on the Detroit river, with 78 boats and a crew of 238 skippers participating. The crowning event was the winning of the Class R race by Russell Pouillot, of the Bayview Yacht club, in his sloop, “Bernida,” which heat “Lightning,” piloted by Neil Lynch, of the Detroit Yacht club. At the right–Sailing into Lake St. Clair from Windmill Pointe. The Edison Boat club is shown in the foreground.

She set a new record in the Michigan A. A. U. four-mile race. Edwardina Kranich won the state long-distance championship title by covering the Detroit river course in 1:10:26 4-5, in the swimming match conducted by the Woman’s Aquatic club, August 22.
