Winter is Coming

Together we go into the future unknown,
One hand in yours and one in my pocket.
“I love you” I’ll say, not to lock down what
We have or we made, it’s not mine to own.

So I’ll keep your clothes, but you keep your name.
We’re side by side, for now we’re close. Stride for stride
Keeping up with time, but by and by, I bide
For goodbye, bracing for pain that paces my way.

Residual chill from embrace pulled away
Makes the hand inside my pocket reach out
For something to grasp once our time is out.
Blinded by bliss that’s here not to stay
My hand meets nothing but melting snow.
I hold yours tighter ‘cause you’re all I know.

Doors will close, but we sneak through windows
But the window gets smaller and I’m getting bigger
The ground gets colder and we’re getting older
Although nights are longer, are you too tired
To lift me through your window?
Will our mistress be a good night’s sleep?
Will we stop being all we need?

Together we go into the future unknown,
One hand in yours and one in my pocket.
“I love you,” I’ll say and I mean what I say,
But youth requires change.
I dread, I fear, I’ll rue that day when that change is you and me.
