2024 CBI Annual symposium
UM CBI trainees ran a great symposium featuring excellent faculty and trainee speakers, a panel of alumni representing different career paths, a poster session, and opportunities for network and learn. This year was special in that not only did we have invited guests from the Wayne State CBI training program, but new guests from the University of Texas Southwestern CBI training program.
José Hernández-Meléndez Award
Senior CBI trainee José Hernández-Meléndez was recognized as one of the 2024 ACS Pride-Merck Graduate Research Awardees, sponsored by ACS Pride, the ACS Division of Professional Relations, and Merck. Congratulations José!
Kira Holton wins poster award
Current CBI trainee Kira Holton (Chase Weidmann lab) won a Poster Excellence Award at the recent Rustbelt RNA Meeting. This annual regional scientific meeting gathers RNA researchers working in the biomedical field from thoughout the Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic states. Nicely done Kira!
CBI Welcome Event
CBI trainees met at the beginning of the fall 2023 semester to get to know each other and to discuss the scientific and professional training that would be most helpful to acquire during our 2023-2024 monthly meetings. Thanks to co-PI Kristin Koutmou for hosting us at her pool on a lovely end-of-Michigan-summer afternoon.
Successful 2023 Annual Symposium
CBI trainees, future trainees, faculty, and the Chemical Biology community enjoyed a successful annual symposium with keynote speaker Paul Hergenrother, talks by UM faculty and our very own Jose Hernández-Meléndez and Maribel Okiye, and a fantastic career panel and poster session. Kudos to CBI trainees Kira Holton, Sydney Alibeckoff, and Austin Ventura who organized the whole event. Nicely done!
Maribel Okiye Wins Award at 2023 NOBCChE
Senior CBI trainee Maribel Okiye represented CBI at the Fall 2023 NOBCChE meeting in New Orleans and won the Winifred Burks-Houch Graduate Leadership Award! This award honors the first female president of NOBCChE and is well-deserved by Maribel!
Maribel Okiye Wins Colgate Award
CBI senior student Maribel Okiye won first place award at the 2023 Colgate Smile with Science Symposium. This award was based on the quality of research and presentations. Congratulations Maribel!
