Working Memory and the “Testing Effect”

P.I. Dr. Kathy Xie

Forming associations among the features of an experience is fundamental to remembering that experience in the future.  This project investigates how “processing” in working memory influences one’s memory for associations in the longer term, that is, minutes, hours or even days later.  These experiments compare the immediate and long term benefits of restudying briefly presented word pairs, versus testing memory for those word pairs. Examining the influence of testing type, testing delay and participant age can further clarify how short term memory and long term memory interact to ensure that memories endure.
