I want to give readers room to be imaginative within the space of my stories. We’re cocreating a story together as writer and reader.
America is the angel that the book is trying to wrestle with, and so, it’s constantly needing to reinvoke and readdress America.
If you write urgently, honestly, I think that it can be easier to be surprised by your own thoughts, your own verse. And that surprise happens many times.
I feel that it is poetry that has led me into political action and not political action which has caused me to write poems.
