Funding

You want to come but don’t know how you’ll cover the tuition and expenses?

Good news!

In this program, you’ll receive five years’ funding to cover tuition, along with a stipend for living expenses during the fall and winter semesters, and Grad Care health insurance.  Health and dental benefits are available for you and your family members.  The University of Michigan Benefits Office offers information about the benefit packages that we offer our PhD students.

As a student in this program, you’ll receive a 20-hour-per-week assignment as graduate student research assistant, graduate student staff assistant, or graduate student instructor.  Your academic progress will be reviewed annually by faculty and awards are contingent upon maintaining good academic standing.

If you have questions about funding, contact Program Administrator Jeanie Laubenthal.

In addition to the funding that we’ll find for you when you’re admitted, there are even more financial resources that might be available to you!

Travel Grants

The Department of English supports travel for one conference, and it also provides funding for job seekers to attend Modern Language Association conference (MLA).

Rackham Travel Grants help students defray traveling expenses incurred to present a poster or paper at a conference.

Research Support

Rackham Research Grants are designed to support students who need assistance to carry out research that advances their progress toward their degree.  If you are a doctoral student, you may qualify twice for these funds, once before candidacy and once as a candidate. If you’re a master’s student, then you are eligible to receive one of these grants.

Dissertation Support

Rackham One-Term Dissertation Fellowships are financial resources which may help you in your final term as you complete and defend your dissertation.

Rackham Predoctoral Fellowships are designed to pay your candidacy tuition, a stipend, and Grad Care health and dental insurance for twelve months during the year in which you finish and defend your dissertation.  The Joint Ph.D. Program in English and Education will submit a nomination packet on your behalf.

Emergency Funding

The Center for the Education of Women offers Critical Difference Grants for students in emergency situations.

Rackham Graduate School administers a Student Emergency Fund to help in case of medical, dental, or mental health emergencies for yourself or, in some circumstances, for your immediate family members.

Financial Aid

A Child Care Subsidy may be available to you if you’re a parent with child care expenses.

The university’s Office of Financial Aid has information about various loan programs for which you may be able to apply.
