The task was, on the surface, a straightforward one: the student authors and translators, all English-language learners, would chronicle their experiences in one language and transpose them into another. They would carry their stories, as they had done their own bodies, into a context legible to their newly imagined audiences.
Megan Berkobien translates from Catalan, Spanish, and Galician. She is completing a PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan, where she founded the Emerging Translators Collective (ETC). The ETC is a growing workshop and DIY micro-press dedicated to transforming the literary translator’s task through the use of collaborative, horizontal publication models.
