Earth 202 – Introductory Environmental Science

Group posing with plants beside green utility vehicle against mountain backdrop

June 2 – July 2, 2025

Date includes travel time and are subject to change.

Earth 202 examines earth and environmental science in the Rocky Mountain west. The objective of the course is to understand, through observation and hands-on experience, how natural and human processes have caused environmental change both in the past and present, in this region. Students will learn principles of the natural sciences, including geology, ecology, and atmospheric sciences, and apply these principles in field settings. Students will also examine today’s most pressing environmental issues including climate change; loss of biodiversity; air, water, and soil pollution; energy use and conservation; and the impacts of various agricultural practices. The course includes frequent outdoor projects, beginner-to-moderate intensity hiking, and field trips to national parks and other sites of interest.

Instructors: EARTH 202 will be co-taught by Drs. Naomi Levin and Jenna Munson. Depending on enrollment, 1-2 graduate student instructors will also complete the instructional team. We try to maintain a student:faculty ratio of 6:1 as often as possible.
