June 30 – July 30, 2026
Date includes travel time and are subject to change.
The Rocky Mountains are an ideal setting to examine the intersection of Earth and environmental science, as well as how Earth and environmental science processes are influenced by climate and human activity. Earth and environmental science processes interact to create landscape- to regional-level patterns of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems that are readily observable across this climatically and geologically diverse region. In this course, we will use the Rocky Mountains as a field laboratory to illustrate and interrogate principles of Earth and environmental science, including geology, hydrology, biology, climatology, and resource management. Much of our time will be spent in the field gathering data and analyzing that data at our field station. Some classroom time will be used for lectures to introduce or support the hands-on work.
EARTH 450 is cross-listed as ENVIRON 450.
Instructors
We offer two sections of Earth 450. The first section will be co-taught by EARTH faculty Nathan Sheldon and Selena Smith. The second section will be taught by EARTH faculty Marin Clark, Rose Cory, and Becky Lange; EEB faculty George Kling.
