Why Teach Equitably?
Equitable teaching is crucial because it ensures that all students, regardless of their backgrounds, have equal opportunities to succeed by addressing systemic barriers and fostering a sense of belonging. This approach not only enhances academic outcomes but also supports broader goals of fairness, inclusivity, and social justice within the educational environment.
- Increased Student Engagement: Equitable teaching practices lead to higher levels of student participation and involvement in learning activities.
- Improved Academic Performance: Students, particularly those from underrepresented groups, tend to achieve better academic outcomes when taught in an
equitable environment.
- Enhanced Sense of Belonging: Equitable teaching fosters a sense of belonging among all students, which is crucial for their academic and
social success. - Reduction in Achievement Gaps: Implementing equity-minded practices helps to narrow the achievement gaps between different student demographic groups.
- Higher Retention Rates: Students are more likely to stay in their courses and programs when they feel supported and included, leading to improved retention rates.
- Better Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills: Equitable teaching encourages diverse perspectives, which enhances students’ critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Greater Student Confidence: When students see themselves reflected in the curriculum and receive support tailored to their needs, their confidence and self-efficacy increase.
- Positive Classroom Climate: An equitable approach contributes to a more positive and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel respected and valued.
- Long-Term Success and Persistence: Students who experience equitable teaching are more likely to persist in their education and succeed beyond the classroom.
- Broader Institutional Impact: Equity-minded teaching contributes to the overall mission of educational institutions to serve diverse student populations more effectively.
Research and Evidence Supporting Equitable Teaching
Our colleagues at the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) have compiled an extensive list of research topics that provide an evidence basis for equity- focused teaching. As defined by the CRLT, equity-focused teaching is an approach that ensures all students have equal access to learning, feel valued and supported, and experience equitable outcomes. This teaching methodology is grounded in extensive research, including studies on classroom climate, stereotype threat, social belonging, and transparency in learning environments. The evidence suggests that while inclusive teaching benefits all students, it is especially impactful for those from underrepresented or historically underserved groups in higher education. Specific practices aligned with this research promote student engagement, persistence, and success across diverse
educational contexts.
