Biography

Born in 1974 in Hong Kong, Stephen Fung was raised in a family of art and performance. His mother, Shi Yen, is a famous cinema actress in Hong Kong in the 1960s.[i] Under her influence, Fung found his passion in creative art at young age. Read more

Fung made his first appearance in the show business in an American movie Forbidden Nights (1990) at the age of 14.[ii]

Fung went to the University of Michigan in 1992 where he was a student at the Stamps School of Art and Design. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design in 1996. Fung started his career in Hong Kong as an actor right after he graduated. He began acting in supporting roles in films such as Summer Show (1995) and The Log (1996).[iii] Fung’s career as an actor began to buoy in late 1990s, followed by his successful portray in dramas such as Bishonen (1998) and The Poet (1998).[iv] His career gradually shifted towards director as he made his directorial debut in an omnibus film Heroes in Love in 2001. With the help of Jackie Chan, he wrote, directed and acted in his more famous movie series Enter the Phoenix (2004) and House of Fury (2005). In 2012 his travail on the Tai Chi Trilogy project, which employed new era martial arts elements, has brought him much success as a director. Fung has truly found his passion in directing, as he put ”now I’m more behind the scenes, and I enjoy it even more than acting.” [v]

Fung has formed Diversion Pictures with actor Daniel Wu. He resides in Hong Kong but works frequently in Los Angeles, California. [vi]

He has pioneered new breeds of television roles such as the Hong Kong police hero with Gen-X Cops (1998) and Sunshine Cops (1999)[vii]. His inspiration in the creation of new types comedy and martial art films has greatly influenced in the film business in Hong Kong. The firm company he co-founded, Diversion Pictures, has produced a trilogy of new-era martial arts films, Tai Chi. The first two chapters, Tai Chi Zero (2012) and Tai Chi Hero (2012), grossed over $50 million USD worldwide. Tai Chi 3, the concluding film, will be shot in the near future[viii].

Fung has also ventured outside of movies. He produced, directed and starred in the successful and highly rated reality TV show Stephen’s Diary (2006) and he directed the music video for “Same World” by singer Karen Mok, winning Best Director at Taiwan’s Golden Melody Awards[ix].
