Biography
Peng taught at the Peking University for several years before he came to the University as a visiting scholar.
Read morePeng Kaiping was born in 1962 in Yueyang, Hunan province, where he found his passion in psychology since youth.[i] He was admitted to Peking University, and received his bachelor degree in clinical psychology.[ii] He taught at the University from 1983 to 1989, and later came to the University of Michigan as a visiting scholar from 1989-1991.[iii] During 1991 to 1997, Peng became a Ph.D. student in social psychology at the University of Michigan, and received his doctoral degree in 1997.[iv] Right after graduated from the University, he became a faculty member at the department of psychology, University of California, Berkeley, and became tenured in 2003.[v] In 2008, Peng was selected by the Chinese national “1000 talent plan (国家千人计划)” and developed a new career in China.[vi] As a part of the Berkeley-Tsinghua Collaborative project, He was appointed as the founding chair of the Psychology Department of Tsinghua University. And the same time, he also directs the Culture and Cognition Lab and the Berkeley Program of Psychological Studies in China at UC-Berkeley.[vii]
Intellectual Influence
Peng was one of the most influential scholars in the field of social psychology. He has published eight books and more than 100 articles and essays on cultural and social psychology, as well as methodological issues of psychology.[viii]
Read moreAs a promising young and later leading scholar of his field, Peng’s works have significantly broadened nowadays understanding in social psychology, and increased the cultural scholarly exchange between China and the U.S. His research article in 1999, Culture, dialectics, and reasoning about contradiction, was selected as one of the classic papers in social psychology, his 2004 paper, Dialectical self and psychological well-being has won the Otto Klineberg Prize for the “best paper of the year” by the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues in 2004.[ix] His 2000 book Cultural Psychology has became the most popular textbook of its subject.[x] He was the world most cited social psychologist at the associate professor level until 2007.[xi]
