Biography

Ping-cheng Yeh (or Benson Yeh) received his Ph.D. in Engineering, Electronics, and Computer Science (EECS) from the University of Michigan, where his main research area includes wireless communication.

During is five years of study at the University (2000 to 2005), Yeh worked at different teaching posts such as the Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) and adjunct lecturer. Yeh’s passion in teaching and education has not only won him the University of Mihigan Outstanding GSI Award, but also inspired him to employ different methods in his teaching to better engage students in the course.

Since 2005, Yeh started working as a professor at National Taiwan University. One of his greatest achievements was the creation of PaGamo, the first educational online gaming platform, which motivates and engages students in their learning, with the employment of gamefication. [i]

Intellectual Influence

Over the years, Yeh has pioneered many educational experiments and designs. His MOOC-based multi-student social game known as PaGamo, won an in innovation in higher education award from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, also won himself the Wharton-QS Stars Awards 2014[ii].

He is also the recipient of the Presidential Innovation Award in 2016, the highest award for innovations in Taiwan. Professor Yeh’s teaching philosophy: “by the students, for the students, of the students,” states that students can be motivated to learn if the teachers can share more responsibility with the students. This philosophy and many of his other innovative teaching methods is reflected in his book, Teach for the Future. His speeches, one of which can be found on the webpage of TedxTaipei, have motivated many teachers to start thinking differently.
