Opportunities to work with undergrads

  • Directed Reading Program:  This graduate-student led program gives Michigan undergraduate students a chance to do some mentored individual reading with a Michigan Math graduate student. Contact Karen Butt, Jason Liang or David Schwein for more information.
  • Math Club:  The undergraduate math club, which meets Thursdays at 4 pm in the Nesbitt room, offers our undergraduate majors a chance to some exciting mathematics. Graduate students often present some tidbit of math here, and socialize afterwards over pizza with the students.
  • Log(M):  Michigan’s Log(M) is part of the National Consortium of Geometry labs, which gives our undergraduate students a chance to work on mathematics projects for credit during the semester, under the guidance of Michigan PhD students, post-docs and faculty. Graduate students often suggest and/or lead or mentor the projects the students work on. Contact Tim Ryan or Mark Greenfield for more information.
  • Michigan’s Summer REU program:  Although the REU program is primarily for undergraduates to work with faculty, sometimes graduate students can get involved as mentors, assistant researchers, organizers of the REU seminars or social activities. Talk to David Speyer about how you can help.
  • Teaching for M-Stem Academies: These “bridge to college” programs help incoming freshman gain the skills and mentor-network they need to succeed at UM. Math GSIs are hired every summer to teach prep courses for Math 105/115/116.
  • LSA advising: LSA hires experienced Math GSIs every summer to help incoming freshman with choices about what math class to take. Ask Lizbee Collins-Wildman about her experience with this.
