Humanities and the Climate Change Crisis

The Humanities Collaboratory welcomes a new 5×5 Incubator Grant team which will be exploring the humanities’ response to the climate change crisis. The task that the new team has set for itself is to “engage in conversations about the role that the humanities can play in addressing [climate change] challenges and the responsibilities that academia should undertake in dealing with the worst crisis humanity has ever faced.” Team members include Robert Platt, Associate Professor, Stamps School of Art and Design; Perrin Selcer, Assistant Professor, History; Jessica Fogel, Professor, School of Theater; Music and Dance, Susan Parrish, Professor, English Language and Literature; and Sara Adlerstein-Gonzalez, Associate Research Scientist, School for Environment and Sustainability.

Designed to spark compelling conversations, 5×5 Incubator Grants bring together small groups of faculty, lecturers, research scientists, librarians, curators, post-docs and other university scholars from a range of fields for a short-term engagement in exploring common interests.

Among the aims expressed by the “Humanities and the Climate Change Crisis” team is a thoughtful re-calibration of cultural practices around climate change: “It is clear that we need a cultural shift in our ambitions, behaviors, and values [in order] to build a desirable future.”
