RESUMEN/ABSTRACT
La ¿desvinculación? del amor y el matrimonio en la literatura del siglo XIX en Puerto Rico
Esta investigación explora algunos aspectos culturales de la sociedad decimonónica en Puerto Rico a través del binomio amor/ matrimonio como categorías historiográficas. Explorando la literatura producida en Puerto Rico en el siglo XIX, puede distinguirse una desvinculación entre el amor y la institución matrimonial. En la literatura Europea se evidencia un auge en los temas sobre matrimonio a partir del siglo XVI, particularmente luego de las reformas establecidas en el Concilio Tridentino. En Puerto Rico, aunque se produjo reconocida literatura durante los siglos XVII y XVIII, no es hasta el siglo XIX que se evidencia una producción literatura compleja y considerada de envergadura cultural. Este trabajo no busca documentar la historia del amor o el matrimonio, sino analizar el factor polisémico en la concepción de estos conceptos, su construcción cultural, algunas de sus representaciones, mentalidades y la utilización del binomio como un regulador social determinante en el siglo XIX. Esto en un intento de acercarnos a la vida social, particularmente a la formación de algunas familias en este periodo y la importancia del amor dentro de esta institución. Tomando en consideración que el estudio de los sentimientos propicia el estudio de nuevos aspectos de la evolución familiar.
The Decoupling of Love and Marriage in 19th Century Puerto Rican Literature
This investigation explores aspects of 19th century Puerto Rican society through the love/marriage binary as historiographical categories. Exploring the literature produced in Puerto Rico in the 19th century, a disconnection between love and the institution of marriage can be seen. In European literature, one notes a boom in themes about marriage after the 16th century, particularly following reforms established by the Council of Trent. In Puerto Rico, although it produced well-known literature during the 17th and 18th centuries, it wasn’t until the 19th century that we see culturally significant and complex literary production. This work does not seek to document the history of love or marriage, rather it focuses on analyzing the polysemic factor of each concept, their cultural constructions, some of their representations, mentalities and uses of the binary as a tool of social regulation in the 19th century. This is an attempt to approach social life of the time, particularly through the formation of some families in this period and the importance of love within the institution of marriage. It thus takes into consideration that the study of emotions promotes the study of new aspects in the evolution of the family.
