Mark L. Wilson’s work addresses human health and economic development in the Third World. Many of these studies evaluate the patterns of social and environmental determinants of diseases, especially those with microbial etiology, and the effectiveness of various interventions aimed at reducing risk. Food systems generate opportunities for improved nutrition, employment and physical well-being, but also exposure to toxins, infectious pathogens, and dependence on global markets. This fundamental contradiction, expressed in all intentional environmental changes that are ostensibly aimed at enhancing human welfare and security, is among his research interests.
