Leah Penniman | “Farming While Black: Uprooting Racism, Seeding Sovereignty”
March 10, 2020 Some of our most cherished sustainable farming practices – from organic agriculture to the farm cooperative and the CSA – have roots in African wisdom. Yet, discrimination and violence against African-American farmers has led to our decline from 14 percent of all growers in 1920 to less than 2 percent today, with a corresponding loss of over 14 million acres of land.

Winona LaDuke | “Indigenous food sovereignty”
February 6, 2018 Food sovereignty is about having choices. Choices of where your food comes from, how it is produced, and what it is that you eat. For Indigenous peoples, food sovereignty is about health, justice, and tradition. Winona LaDuke has been working on the issues of food sovereignty for over 30 years.

Frances Moore Lappé | “Beyond Hunger: Toward Food Democracy”
January 17th, 2017 Lappe begins exploring “thought traps” that block the pathway to solutions for so many: Primary is the false diagnosis that hunger results from scarcity that has kept the global focus fixed on production, using an industrial-chemical model of farming. She argues that this model itself so concentrates power and undermines food-producing resources that hunger and land and water degradation continue no matter how much is food grown. She underscores how this false frame has also led to agriculture worldwide contributing even more to heating our planet than all transportation causes.
