While nutrition and cooking classes are an important part of (re)educating the public about healthier food options, does it go far enough to motivate wider actions that address environmental problems, food injustices and other issues facing our food system? How can we teach children and youth that another food system is possible? What role can school gardens, teacher education programs, and community-based education programs play in consciousness raising? How can the food students eat in school play a role in the education process (and how easy is it change the food that’s served)? We will grapple with these and other questions, learning from a school district chef, non-profit activist and researcher-educators.
