Film Screening and Q & A with Executive Producers of Al Alcance de la Mano

You can watch the event recording here.

Event Date: March 5, 2021 from 5 – 6 pm

In collaboration with the Michigan Theater, the Sustainable Food Systems Initiative is hosting a film screening and live Q&A with the Executive Producers of Al Alcance de la Mano on March 5, 2021. This film details the work of two University of Michigan alumni, Dr. Helda Morales and Dr. Bruce Ferguson, who teach agroecological concepts through their work with school gardens in Chiapas, Mexico. Their work values both academic school knowledge and community local knowledge to bring together food, science, learning, and community. Morales and Ferguson were guest speakers at a UofM Food Literacy for All panel here from 2019 and you can read about their work in a recent publication here.

Register here to attend the evening discussion with Morales and Ferguson that will be moderated by our Advisory Member and Professor at the School for Environment and Sustainability, Ivette Perfecto. Learn more about the event here.

If you are interested in learning more about agroecology, you can watch EEB Professor and SFSI Advisory member, Dr. John Vandermeer, discuss the topic through an in-depth series of lectures on our website here

Meet the Executive Producers

Helda Morales

Morales works as a researcher at El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR), a federal research center, and works alongside Ferguson to promote the Laboratorios para la Vida program. This program works to inspire a love for nature in young people from Chiapas and blends her background in pest management and peasant knowledge.

Bruce Ferguson

As an agroecologist and former student of SFSI faculty, Dr. Bruce Ferguson is a researcher and professor in Mexico at the Agroecology Group at ECOSUR as well. You can read a faculty spotlight of Ferguson here to learn about his work and the reason for his affinity for peanut butter.
